In Human Development I, we had the opportunity to study the differences in the way in which people cope with stress. We studied coping strategies including problem focused coping, emotion focused coping, social support coping and defensive coping. This information learned is important to the field of SSW and working directly with clients. By understanding the ways in which people cope with stress, I can gain perspective on where my clients are coming from when they are struggling and what mechanisms they generally use to manage. I can offer additional coping strategy options and help them discover if their current coping method is effective for them. If they do not have a social support coping method, we can look at those in their life and determine who may be helpful to them in times of high stress. We can discover social supports within the community and resources to ensure they have access to the social support needed to effectively manage their stress and gather support.
