· The word count excludes the lay abstract, diagram legends; tables; and the bibliography (references).

· Read and understand the question – it is a guide and signposts where the focus of your essay should be.
· The essay structure is important in guiding the reader and should include an introduction, main body, and conclusion.
o The introduction provides an overview of the essay (i.e., what is being discussed) with some background information.
o You can choose to use sub-titles if you decide this adds clarity.
o Each of the paragraphs in the body of the essay should start with a topic sentence. Give your explanation and your opinion on the topic sentence. Each paragraph should have information from more than one source, with in-text citations; it compares and contrasts sources in an objective (two-sided) interpretation and informs the reader why the source supports the argument. The last sentence of the paragraph should give a conclusion/outcome for that topic.
o The conclusion section connects the ideas from the sources to your essay and describes how each supports your viewpoint. It states the importance of your topic from the evidence and reasons that you have discussed in the essay. The conclusion also rewords your claim, so it is clear you are offering a different perspective on the topic.
· Academic writing should be more formal, concise, unbiased and include good use of language.
· Critical thinking is what will make your essay stand out. It shows you are engaging with theories in an academic manner.
· Make sure you cite and reference sources appropriately and be aware of the rules around plagiarism. Plagiarism is monitored using Turnitin and this process is managed by the Student Office & the Head of Year.
