National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

2 min read

Mental health refers to psychological, emotional, and cognitive well-being (Nordqvist, 2017). Mental health is a critical part of human health. Several decades ago, mental illnesses were an unspoken issue that attracted a lot of embarrassment and stigma. In 1979, two mothers (Beverly Young and Harriet Shetler) shared about their children who had severe mental illness left unattended for many years due to fear of stigma and discrimination.

Through linking with numerous partners and associates, the National Alliance on Mental Illness was incorporated in 1979 to create awareness and seek solutions for mental health patients across different states (NAMI, 2017). Today, the organization’s head office is in Arlington, Virginia. NAMI adopts a medical approach to mental illness termed Anasognosia that explains how individuals are unaware of mental conditions and how that influences their perceptions.

Through programs like NAMI peer-to-peer, NAMI on Campus, and Ending the Silence, NAMI is educating families and patients on the essence of addressing mental illness. Also, NAMI influences the state, federal, and local policies concerning support for mental health wellness. Moreover, the organization has a helpline that receives requests from individuals to assist them in accessing resources useful for addressing mental illnesses (NAMI, 2017). Additionally, NAMI holds and sponsors public events like NAMI walks and Mental Health Month to create awareness and decrease stigma.

NAMI is a nationwide organization with relatively autonomous organizations functioning at state and local levels. Throughout the years, it has formed partnerships with companies like Twitter, Instagram, and Fox Sports. NAMI is a non-profit organization funded by federal agencies, individuals, and corporations (NAMI, 2017).
