Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) focuses on an individual’s current and future expectations in achieving set goal.  Solution-focused group work is a strategy of using group work as a mechanism of communicating ideas and teaching that is applied in a wide range such as nursing, community work, psychology, social work, and counseling. Therefore, the research aims to discuss psychotherapy solution-focused and group work.

Psychoanalysis was not accessible to many people during the first half of the 20th century.  Psychodynamic therapies and psychoanalytic therapies lasted for years until systematic, person-centered, and behavioral methods designed for the short term were developed by Steve de Shazer. It is widely used which involves intensive engagement to visualize the client’s expected results by identifying strengths and resources available to mitigate the problem.  SFBT establishes a collaborative relationship, facilitates pre-therapy change, mindful termination of therapy, and providing client’s feedback at the end of every session (Lee, 2013). Besides, it integrates scaling questions, and provision of assignments as a mediation process.

Group works are designed to promote mutuality and solidarity when carrying out SFBT. People of different identities might be grouped for common goals band promote solidarity. The key significance of using group work in psychotherapy is to achieve common goals according to Doel (2006).  The success of the group work depends on factors such as effective hypotheses and theories to provide immediate intervention (Doel, 2006). Some theories include cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic theory, and mediation therapy.  In group work, cognitive behavioral therapy is applicable in identifying changes or disturbing thought patterns that result in negative attitudes or behavior among people.

The psychodynamic theory focuses on human functioning particularly the unconscious drives. Therefore, through crisis intervention and narrative mediation approach, SFBT is achieved through individual and group work.
