Nursing practice aim at prevention of diseases, alleviation of suffering and promotion of health. Nursing problems are focus on the actual and potential problems. Also nursing problems centers on the holistic being, as it shows the physical, psychosocial, cultural, economic, and even spiritual aspect of the individual, family or community.
On the other hand medical problems centers on the diseases and illness pathology. Medical problem is stated off the clinical signs and symptoms manifested by the patient. While the nurse will be interested on the prevention of a diseases or its effect on the general wellbeing of an individual, the physician will be keen about the causes, diseases course and treatment
Nursing problem gives a holistic and individualistic approach to the care of patients acknowledging the physiological and psychological response of the patient to the diseases.
For example a physician may give a diagnosis of cerebrovascular accident (stroke) for a patient, the nurse will go beyond the disease process, look at the patient’s total wellbeing and response to the stroke and give problem statement like impaired communication, risk for fall altered family function etc. while the medical problem only give information about the disease pathology, the nursing problem expresses the impact of the diseases on the patients whole health and the family
“Formulating a clear question is the first step in clinical enquiry” (Martha, 2018). To achieve a systematic, individualized and client centered care PICOT statement must be based on a nursing practice problem. When using PICOT, the nurse identifies the “P-population (age group, ethnicity, sex, race etc) I-intervention (tests, screening, therapies, medication etc) C[1]comparison (alternative to interventions eg procedures, surgeries etc) O-outcome (what to expect after intervention eg less pain, full recovery etc) T- time (time frame for intervention)” (Lasing Community College, 2020). This ensures an orderly patient focused assessment and nursing intervention
