For the final project, each student will select an example or phenomenon in visual culture that interests them (you can take a look at the textbook for some ideas, but do not use the textbook as a reference. Pg: 61-74, 103-31, 223-264, 301-311, 389- 430).
You will research this topic and produce an analysis of the phenomenon in the form of a critical essay (or alternative format per permission of the professor). This is not meant to be an opinion piece or position paper. Rather, you will look at the historical roots of a contemporary issue in visual studies and apply theories from the class to your particular example.
The final project will be 6-8 double-spaced pages, 12-point font.
Students will select an example, do research on the example, and write a critical essay or complete a research project of a different format per permission of the professor.
Please include any visual examples you used in the paper as well.
Select one phenomenon in visual culture that interests you. Research the topic and produce an analysis of the phenomenon in the form of a critical essay. This is not meant to be an opinion piece or position paper. Rather, you will look at the historical roots of a contemporary issue in visual studies, and apply theories from the class to particular examples. As part of the process of completing the final project, students will: turn in a draft to discuss with the professor; 2) give a presentation to share with the class that you will post to Moodle and then discuss during our synchronous meeting. During the presentation, students will prepare feedback and questions for each “presenter.” Classmates will ask questions and offer appropriate feedback. All of these components will be graded as part of the final project. 3) Turn in your final project on the last day of class (December 10).
